What we did:
Complete gut. We replaced all the drywall and subfloor. Marble tile on the floor and up the sides of the walls, new door, trim, new shower and shower doors, all new fixtures, new vanity cabinet and mirror, new toilet. Painted walls Benjamin Moore Sterling.
Basement

Before

What we did:
The basement was completely gutted. One of the biggest projects we took on but also one of the most rewarding. We turned a catastrophic space into a usable bonus room, complete with lots of extra storage areas.
The center of the main room was sunken. When it had been renovated in the 80s the owners apparently decided to keep that area as a dance floor and used the cement footers around the perimeter as seating. This made little practical sense for using the space. Since we had the ceiling height we needed to do so, we filled in the "hole" in the center of the room so that the space was all one level height.
All new drywall, ceilings, electrical, etc. New tile and carpet. New baseboards/trim. New ceiling light fixtures throughout. Painted walls Benjamin Moore London Fog. Refinished fireplace by painting it and adding a floating mantel. Painted staircase railings.
Added two storage closets by enclosing the hot water heater as well as the space to the left of the fireplace (storage closets are not pictured but one is behind and to the left of the fireplace, the other is behind the desk). Added built in shelving next to the fireplace.
What we did:
This was another complete gut! When we reconfigured the basement to include storage closets and an inclosed laundry room, we moved the bathroom door from the left hand side wall to where it is now. All new fixtures, new electrical, drywall, flooring, tiling, etc. Paint color Benjamin Moore Hazy Lilac.
Laundry Room
After
What we did:
I don't have a before pic but take my word that it was just as crappy as the rest of the basement. There was no actual laundry room so we closed it off to make one. To the left of the camera is a space for storage shelving. New back door, new tile, painted, new washer/dryer.
Deck/Backyard Patio
Before
After
What we did:
Ripped out existing deck and built new one. Built two stone planters. Replaced brick walkway from back door to deck. Repaired fencing.

Beautiful house!! Your renos look much less painful than ours (though I'm sure the pictures make it look much easier than it was!)... we seem to be running into... adventures, let's call them, at almost every turn.
I must say I love your ceiling beams in the master bedroom. I do think they make the ceiling look lower than if you painted them out, but they add such great depth and dimension to the room that is so hard to get otherwise. They give it a great cozy and warm feeling too!
I also love the shades of blue and grey you've chosen. Looks amazing with the wood floors and exposed brick!! Great job!
(If you'd like to visit our place you can at whitecollargreensoul.blogspot.com we're not nearly as far along, though! If only...)
az|m - We ran into our share of "adventures" too! There is always something that comes up when you DIY that you aren't expecting! Thanks for your comment about the beams. I love getting input! I'm going to hop over to your blog now to check it out.
Wow!
WOW!!! I love, love, LOVE your green kitchen! I think you and I have very similar decorating taste :)
I really want to feature this on Not "Baaad" Sundays with LambAround but the rule was that your blog had to mention where you were linked up to somewhere. Am I just overlooking the link? Let me know and I'll add you to my Link Party post :)
You have been so busy! I love all the changes, it looks like s wonderful space to live in. That kitchen is fab-u-lous! And now I'm TOTALLY going to paint our dark beams.
Hi there! I am your newest follower!!! I found you on the Sunday linky!! I love finding new blogs and your is lovely:)
You can find me at www.bouffeebambini.blogspot.com
WOW. it's gorgeous! It's amazing! Can I move in?
What a drastic transformation! I found you through the blog hop on Lamb Around (lambaround.blogspot.com) You are very creative!
Great house! Its amazing what you've done with it! Great job! I love the kitchen :)
Wow! You guys have done a fabulous job! I love the paint color in your kitchen! Can't wait to see more renovations.
Oh my gosh - your house looks great! Love all the changes you've made - a beautiful job!
I just have to gush about how much I love all of your renovations! You've kept the spirit of the DC rowhouse completely intact, but have modernized it, and made everything so stylish. And I love your design and materials choices... the river rock around the fireplace is my favorite, but I love your paint colors, the fact that you kept the brick red, everything. Was your cool front door original, or did you guys add that?
Love it all!
xoxo,
tanja
Tanja - Thank you so much! The front door is original. We actually have painted the outside of the front door a dark red. We are going to be painting the entire outside of the house so I will post pictures of that when we are done!
Wow... I can't believe the transformation! You've definitely snatched up a fantastic property and seen its potential. My man and I will probably end up back in DC near my family, and our dream is to do what you've done (but god I can only imagine the expense!). I would love to get some tips from you about good buying neighborhoods these days (since I haven't lived there in a few years and am not totally up-to-date with the market).
Fabulous effort.
It looks stunning! Love your choices!
A friend in TN told us about your blog, and we were so glad to not only discover you're also in DC, but to see this amazing set of before & afters. The renovation is amazing -- many congrats. Look forward to reading more about your kitchen adventures as well.
These room transformations are amazing- FABULOUS actaully! I would love to have you come and do a house tour on my blog Remodelaholic. If you are interested would you please let me know via email (you can just respond to this comment if you are interested)! Thanks!

Wow, I love the redecorating, especially that green kitchen paint with the black flooring and details. Very nice. Found your site through a Facebook post of the bbq pork loin recipe . . . blog world is a weird and wonderful place. I will have to copy the recipe. Looks delish.
Thanks, Shelley! The blog weird is crazy, isn't it?
OMG congratulations, I love just everything about your house. It's absolutely beautiful. I would never want to get out of it.
You have an absolutely BEAUTIFUL house! I love it. Everything looks wonderful!
Congratulations!!! It really looks amazing!!! Veronica Seva
Your renovations are stunning. Great job!
Gorgeous! Congratulations!
I don't know how long you have worked on this, but it looks great! It definitely looks like a lot of work, but I'm sure the outcome was worth it.
I really don't know that I agree with your choice of paint colors for some of these. The basement reno looks really nicely done, and I love the wall color for the guest bedroom (did you mention what it is?)
But it is for that very same reason that I don't get the warmer tones. They liven up the room, sure, but the problem I have is this: the nice flooring is already such a warm orange/ruddy color, why not contrast with it (like you did very well in the guest bedroom)? The orange/yellow tones just seem too samey to the flooring, causing a bit of an overload IMHO.
And I hear a lot of votes of support for the jalapeno green kitchen, but to me it is an eyesore. Sorry. It literally hurts my eyes, and screams "cheap Swedish trendy flat" (ie. IKEA) Mostly I just think it is going to look really dated really soon (maybe jalapeno green is to this decade what avocado green was to the 70s?)
Also, I'm undecided on your exterior finish (I found this site because I like BM Platinum Gray as a possibility, and did a Google search for it); it doesn't look bad, but I have a fondness for brick rowhouses and the exterior of yours already appeared pretty nice from the beginning.
Anyway, congrats on getting all of this work done.. (I'm in the process of repainting and fixing up my 100-year-old place in Napa Valley right now, so that's why I'm reading those sorts of blogs)
Also... some of the photos are very nicely done (bang-up job on both the basement renovation and the photography of it)
Hi there,I found your blog via Pinterest.
I love your renovations, you have a great eye for colour and design. The house is very deceptive from the outside - it looks narrow, yet the photos show a spacious interior.Well done, you have a lovely home.
Cheryl
And we loved your Slow Cooker Pork Carnita's! Shared that recipe with my brother & Sister in-law.She loved that recipe! Just came across your reno. photo's.Job well done! Very few people have the foresight to be able to do what you did. Really a knock-out job. Fun to see REAL people put in the effort. Please post more! Mary Lynn
