Upstairs Bathroom Renovation

This was one of our last renovation projects. I wanted to have the basement and the basement bathroom finished first so that we could use that bathroom while the upstairs one was being renovated.

The bathroom was a sight to behold, chocolate brown from top to bottom! I can't believe we lived with it for so long. All I wanted for this was lots and lots of white. We chose marble tile which we continued up the walls. Finding a toilet and vanity small enough to fit in the small space was a feat but we finally found a super low profile toilet that fit perfectly. Even with just the vanity cabinet and mirror I feel like there was ample storage space. For additional storage we added the white shelving above the toilet. We took a chance by forgoing a tub in this bathroom and doing a shower with gorgeous sliding glass doors.

For paint we went with a super light gray color (Benjamin Moore Sterling) just to give it a little bit of depth from the white accents. It's hard to tell from this photo since it all pretty much washes together.

I am showing the before photo first because that is the one that usually shows up in thumbnails of the post and I can't handle seeing that heinous brown bathroom more than absolutely necessary!

And it here it is before in all it's chocolate glory...

Recipe Re-visit: Slow Cooker Irish Pot O' Stew

Is it cold in your neck of the woods? It has been here up until today and tomorrow is supposed to be 60! I'm thankful because I love to get out of the house on strolls with Violet but when it is too cold I end up being stir crazy.

Whenever the temp drops below freezing I crave a nice, warm, hearty stew. This slow cooker meal is super easy and it will be all ready to warm you up when you get home from your day! This recipe is one of my favorites that I make over and over.

Prosciutto, Brie and Apple Quesadillas

I came across these on CL and knew I had to try them.  I am a cheese whore, what can I say? I had some prosciutto on hand and added it in and I thought it complemented the sweetness of the apple and the peppery arugula perfectly! These are simple and delicious and make a great lunch or light dinner. Leave off the prosciutto for a vegetarian option.

1 tbsp Dijon mustard
2 tsp apple cider
3 10-inch tortillas
6 oz brie, rind removed and thinly sliced
1 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
6 slices prosciutto
3 cups arugula
Freshly ground black pepper

Combine mustard and cider in a small bowl, stirring well.

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Spread each tortilla with the mustard mixture. Place 1 tortilla mustard-side-up in the pan. Arrange 1/3 of the cheese and prosciutto over the tortilla and cook until cheese begins to melt (about 1 minute).

Arrange 1/3 of the apple slices over the top and 1 cup arugula. Sprinkle with freshly ground pepper. Fold tortilla in half and press lightly with a spatula.

Cook 2 minutes on each side or until lightly browned. Repeat with remaining tortillas.

Recipe Re-visit: Pork and Sauerkraut

I've been going through my old food photos to see what I have left over that I never got around to blogging. I haven't been doing any fun cooking in the hotel. Mostly a lot of crock pot repeats (the brown sugar and balsamic pork has been a staple as well as cream cheese and black bean chicken and the other day was perfectly freezing enough for coq au vin which I still can't believe is a WW recipe).

Anyway, a lot of what I have to blog are what I call "recipe re-visits". In the beginning of my blogging days my pictures were less than stellar so I try to go back and re-make some of the meals so that I can take better pictures. I then update the old posts and create a new post as well. For those of you newer to my blog hopefully they are new recipes to you, too!

We have pork and sauerkraut every year on New Year's Day (apparently it is a Lancaster County thing). These pictures are actually from last New Year's Day but I never got around to blogging them. This New Year's we were in the process of moving from my parent's house to the hotel in PA but Casey's mom saved us some of hers so we still got to have it. Just a day late!

View the original post and recipe here. I love to serve these with mashed potatoes.

Violet's Nursery

This is probably my favorite room in our old house! It is definitely the one I miss the most as I have many memories of Violet's first few months spent inside these walls.

The main things that we did renovation-wise were to put down Pergo flooring and new baseboards, replace the doors, and the window. My decorating goal was to have a room that was girly but not overtly pink, and stylish but not too babyish.

Here is the before picture:

Detail shots:

I love this room so much, I am tempted to replicate it exactly in our new house but then another part of me says to try something new! I do really love the paint color, though, it is a beautiful robin's egg/Tiffany blue.

Item Specifics:
Paint - Valspar Aqua Glow
Dresser - Ikea with knobs from Anthropologie
Nightstand - Ikea
Glider - Monte Luca
Lamps - Ikea and Target
Crib - Babyletto
Mirror - Ikea, spray painted pink
Shelves - Ikea
Pink storage boxes - JJ Cole
Violet and Bulldog pictures - Homegoods/TJMaxx

Wow, it has been such a long time since I have felt like I have had the time to upkeep this blog. I miss it often but I feel like I have had so much to do and so little time to share lately. However, I want to start blogging some again. We have so many changes going on in our lives and there are more to come.

First, and most importantly, the birth of our daughter, Violet, in early June 2012.

I can't believe she is already 7 months old!

Of course, we had to have an amazing nursery for her (pictures to come in a separate post).

With Violet's arrival it became clearer and clearer to us that we were done with the city life. Living in DC was a blast but we wanted a change. So after much deliberation we decided to relocate to Casey's hometown of Lancaster, PA. The moving process was a whirlwind and from start to finish and we closed less than a month from listing! One of my goals is to share the final renovation pictures here.

We are currently living out of a hotel in PA until we find the home of our dreams (or perhaps another renovation project to make it the home of our dreams).

I want this blog to become a space to share things about motherhood and Violet, wonderful recipes (as soon as I get all my cooking tools out of storage and have a real kitchen), and our home buying and renovating whatever home we purchase.
