Some Progress

I have yet to post before/after pics of what we have done so far. The main reason for this is that my personal computer died (or was killed) and I still need to retrieve the before photos from it. You really can't appreciate the afters until you see how awful the befores really were.

Here is a quick look at what is going on with the kitchen...

New door because the old one was hung too low and wouldn't open all the way (also, it was ugly):Start of the new floor. The hanging electrical boxes are from the wall that was torn down:
View from the dining room (you will notice the collection of Miller Lite cans, renovating is beer work):
New electrical and insulation:
And, drywall is almost up (no picture yet). But, the drywall is green and helped to solidify my paint color choice for the kitchen, BM Jalapeno Green. It's going to look so awesome with the black and white kitchen.

Box Spring Cover

I have one of those beds that require either a dust ruffle or something to cover up the box springs. This bed is from Ikea. One day I will get a nice KING size bed, but until then, this is what we have...

I am definitely not into the dust ruffle thing so I asked my mom if she knew of a way to hide my box spring. She turned me on to a little thing called a box spring cover. Perfect. The one I got is from BB&B here. It actually just goes around the sides of the boxspring and velcros together in the back. You can get covers that go over the entire box spring but we opted for this due to price. Now our bed looks like this...

I didn't take pictures of our bed with all the bedding b/c we have ugly, old bedding. Once the bedroom design starts coming together, I'll be able to pick out something nice for us.

Kitchen Checklist

For my sanity, a to-do list:
  • gut the kitchen
  • tear down wall between kitchen and dining room
  • re-wire kitchen electrical, all new outlets and switches
  • re-wire electrical from torn down wall
  • re-do plumbing, connect plumbing to outdoor hose in back yard
  • move gas line
  • replace door to backyard
  • paint door
  • box in areas where wall was torn down
  • add new insullation
  • put up new drywall
  • take down ceiling light fixtures
  • paint walls and ceiling
  • add/paint moulding around window and back door
  • replace ceiling light fixtures (add light over sink, pendant lighting)
  • tile floor
  • hang cabinets and cabinet moulding
  • install appliances
  • install cabinet knobs and pulls
  • install under-cabinet lights
  • install sink, garbage disposal, faucet,
  • have granite countertops installed
  • tile backsplash
  • unpack and put away all kitchen items
Yikes, we have a lot to do. Although, I think the most time consuming items are behind us (perhaps besides the tiling which we have already started at least). Also, we are leaving the torn down wall/peninsula area for last because we can have the main area of the kitchen up and running before that is done.

Sunday, March 29, 2009

So, I haven't had much to post about lately. We are still working away on the kitchen. Apparently, re-doing all the electrical and plumbing in the kitchen is way more time consuming then one would have thought. We are getting close to finished with that, though, and hope to start drywalling this week. I finally took some pictures of a few things we have done and I will post those soon.

Yesterday we ordered our appliances, KitchenAid Architect Series II.
Here is our gas range. I wanted a slide-in range because I love the way they look. Slide-ins have the buttons on the front instead of a plate in the back. This is also a convection oven and has a super cool built-in meat thermometer. I can't wait to use that! The bottom drawer is also a warming drawer.

Then we have the microwave/hood. This is just the basic model, I wasn't too picky about features on this one. Here is our dishwasher. This is the basic dishwasher inside, nothing too fancy. I just wanted one that has the buttons on the inside of the door.

Hopefully we can eventually get the matching fridge but, for now, we are going to keep the one that was here.
It's a relief to have these picked out and ordered. I think I can finally start to see the light at the end of this very long tunnel... I hope we have the kitchen done as a birthday present to me. That gives us a little over a month. Okay, truthfully, that is not going to happen but I like to dream!

Bedroom Furniture

Now that are bedroom is the first somewhat done room in the house, I am starting to daydream about new bedroom furniture. All we have left to do is fix the ceiling and get a new bedroom door but those are low on the priority list for now.
I would like two bedside tables with lamps on them. I like the ones below from C&B.

Also, a nice big dresser that we can share. Or not, because Casey has way more clothes than could ever possibly be necessary for a man. He can use an old dresser in the spare bedroom for his overflow.
Also, a nice stand-alone mirror. I have no full-length mirror right now and it irks me to no end. I guess as long as the top half of me looks decent, I'm okay.

I like this rug from Pottery Barn for under the bed.
Lastly, a nice slipper chair for the "reading nook" aka otherwise useless space, like this one from Target.

I asked bank of Casey if I could buy the new furniture now but was denied until the kitchen project is done. Hey, one of us has to keep us on budget. For now, I can just imagine what our bedroom will look like one day...

Kitchen Design II

We did a little tweaking on the kitchen design. Here is the final version, we ordered the cabinets today!

The changes we made were to eliminate the glass doors on the cabinets above the microwave and to make them longer so that the bottom of the microwave will be in line with the bottom of the rest of the cabinets. I also added a glass door to the cabinet above the peninsula.
Now we just have to pick out appliances and lay down the tile floor before the cabinets come in 4 to 6 weeks!
